As well as permanent displays about Cannock Chase, coal mining, social history and toys & games from the past, the museum also hosts an exciting and ever-changing temporary exhibition programme throughout the year.  The programme of exhibitions provides an opportunity to view the work of local artists and touring exhibitions from around the country, as well as special displays created by the museum. Picasso: Histoire Naturelle is a National Touring Exhibition from the Hayward Gallery. Considered by many to be one of Picasso's most important graphic productions, this set of 31 prints depicts animals, birds, insects and other creatures. Picasso created these images to accompany the classic 18th century text, Histoire Naturelle, by the eminent French naturalist, GeorgeLouis Leclerc de Buffon. Combining a wide variety of techniques, including liftground aquatint, etching and drypoint, Picasso produced images of great clarity, immediacy and beauty. The exhibition will be at the Museum of Cannock Chase until 9th July 2006.

Ranbir Kaur is an international installation artist who uses a traditional technique called Rangoli (translation 'welcoming sign'). Historically, rice and coloured powders are used, but Ranbir will be using natural materials found in the forest, such as leaves, berries and acorns. This will be an exciting chance to see Ranbir create an exquisite work of art and also for you to have an opportunity of contributing to additional work, which will be made during the launch of the 'Route to Health' Sculpture Trail. 'Punch & Judy's Puppet Factory' Be inspired by our Punch & Judy exhibition and make your own fabulous hand puppets with Leon. Workshops are suitable for children aged 7 to 11 and take place at 10am to 12noon and 1pm to 3pm (choose a morning or afternoon workshop). Please note that the Puppet Factory workshop will last 15 minutes longer than usual and will therefore end at 12.15pm and 3.15pm. All workshops cost £3 per child and are allocated on a first come, first served basis. To book your workshops, please return a booking form to the Museum as soon as possible. We cannot take bookings over the phone. For a booking form please call the Museum between 11am and 4pm, Monday to Friday or download it at www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/museum. Also, during half-term the Museum will be going puppet mad with free hourly Punch & Judy shows on Wednesday 18th February (first show at 1.30pm) Thursday 19th February (first show at 11.30am). Hero dogs remembered on Armistice Day

A special service to celebrate working dogs is taking place at Cannock Chase Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is inviting working dogs and their owners to a special service this Armistice Day. The service has been inspired by Freda, a Dalmatian-type dog that was the New Zealand Rifles’ mascot, when the regiment was stationed on Cannock Chase during the First World War. She died in 1918 while the regiment was training on Cannock Chase, and is buried there. In memory of Freda, and dogs like her, the AONB is holding a service at her grave. We have a number of volunteers who help out at various sites around the AONB to ensure that we have healthy heathlands. Tools and equipment are supplied, but you will need to wear suitable clothing and footwear and bring a packed lunch with you if you intend to stay for the 4 hours. At the end of the work session, Bob the Ranger will lead a guided tour of the site.

Whether you are remembering the bravery of a military or police dog, or a missed service dog, everyone is welcome to come to this short service. We are also keen for any working dogs to be there, and we’re sure they will enjoy a walk in the beautiful surroundings of Cannock Chase. The service will be led by Rev Jane Nash and will include readings and poems and laying a wreath.

We are working with Staffordshire County Council and the Forest of Mercia Project Team to assess the condition of signs and waymarkers on public rights of way around the AONB. This first session will provide training for volunteers so that they know what to look out for.
